Any other theories about why the man who ran out onto the court and attempted to put a hat on Roger Federer in the second set of the French Open final today was carrying the flag of F.C. Barcelona?

There was that bloke who did it during the Euro 2004 final, I think he was a publicity seeker called Jimmy Jump. I dunno what US commentary on situations like this are, but in the UK the commentators never show a streaker or a dog etc. and try to generate disapproval when the vast majority of the audience find it quite amusing. Remember Paul Robinson tripping that guy up with stealth?
US tends to cut away as well. Best streaker though was the 1996 Wimbledon final with Richard Krajicek and Malivai Washington.
disagree Tim.
Best streaker was the guy on superbowl, that got in dressed as a referee.
That Jimmy Jump fella is a rank amateur compared to this chap.
Ha ha, what a good dog! But why would you bring him to a sporting event? Moments like that make me wish I had a dog growing up.
Does anyone remember the Copa America in Peru when a dog ran onto the pitch and the security took ten minutes to trap him? Classic.
It was Jimmy Jump. He’s Catalan. And, yeah, it was a dig at Nadal’s Real Madrid enthusiasm and the fact that he was being “dethroned.”
And so it was. Though I think the meaning would have been a lot clearer if Nadal didn’t also have an uncle who played 208 times for Barcelona in the 90s.
Yeah Nadal supports Madrid.
You remember the famous Ray Hudson call when Madrid won the 06-07 liga?: “Would ya stop talking about tennis players and stupid hollywood actors Phil!”
Phil just wants to talk about Nadal and Tom Cruise. Ray wants to talk about the gladiators…. and maybe Riquelme.
Nadal also loves Barcelona, though.
Ah goal, the bastion of truth, the guardian of justice, the shining emblem of….
Well, okay, but it’s not like they just fabricated the quote. He’s on record in numerous other places expressing his support for Barcelona, including his Times Online blog and his own website. Which has nothing to do with anything, except that it made the streaker’s motivations slightly harder to discern than if Rafa had been some kind of rabid anti-Barca Madid obsessive.
I get the impression that he just enjoys football rather than being clannishly obsessed with one team, which actually makes me like him more, if anything.
Nadal also loves Barcelona, though.
Dante had a great place in hell for the lukewarm.
Well its official, Galacticos part II. We’ll see who Nadal is supporting next year.
