Rick Parry Dies a Quiet Death in the Soft Liverpudlian Night
by Brian Phillips · February 27, 2009
Rick Parry is leaving his position as the chief executive of Liverpool at the end of the season, the club announced this morning. The best thing about the statements from Parry, Tom Hicks, and George Gillett is that they don’t even pretend to offer a polite explanation: no “I want to spend more time with my family,” no “I’ve realized my dreams for the club,” not even a quick “It’s time to seek other challenges.” Just a terse nod to his 12 years at the club, a word reassuring fans of a smooth transition (an odd point to make, given that nothing at Liverpool is ever smooth and that most Liverpool fans seem to have hated Parry’s policies anyway), and the hiss of the guillotine blade falling.
Which is to say: It looks like Rafa really will be staying.
