by Brian Phillips · January 20, 2009

This friendly little character, Petrolito, is the mascot for the South American U-20 Championship, which kicked off yesterday in Venezuela. His name means “Little Oily,” according to the CONMEBOL website. He represents a drop of petroleum. The petroleum sector accounts for roughly a third of Venezuela’s economy. He is a friendly little creature based on an anthropomorphized unit of fossil fuel.
