I remember this incredible feeling once when I batted down a perfect long ball and found myself suddenly fighting with the keeper who leapt to my feet to get the ball away. He eventually won, kicking the ball away from my feet to a defender coming in at the last minute, but I remember this sense of creating something out of nothing, turning the game on its head with one incredible pass. I'm a defender so it was a precious moment...

Nice post. I know precisely how it feels to be out of my depth on the field yet to suddenly, inexplicably, find myself through on goal with only the keeper to beat...One could extend that into an as-metaphor-for-life type of thing, were one so inclined.

Thanks for this post. The experience of boredom is an underrated aspect of following sports, and deserves more analysis. We need the dull patches in order to appreciate the brilliant moments, but we also need the dull patches for their own sake, I think.
