All in a Day’s Senseless Submission to the Arbitrary Whims of the Universe

How do you feel today if you’re a Sheffield United fan? This morning you learned that your club had won its £30 million case against West Ham over the Carlos Tevez fiasco. Great, right? Then this evening you watched your club lose 6-0 in the Carling Cup to the youngest side in Arsenal’s history. You’re rich, but you’re surrendering goals to children. So what really matters in football?
I realize that had the illicit brilliance of Tevez not sent the club down two years ago, they would have had the resources to assemble a stronger squad than the one that played today, so it’s kind of a roundabout question. But as an illustration of the random emotional shocks that life throws at sports fans, today’s a pretty good test case, which is why I’m wondering which feeling Blades fans will seize on. Would you feel happy about the future or upset about the present? Would you think about the money or the game?
I’m guessing they’re happy. Money means something. And it’s only the Carling Cup.
