This is such an insightful take on what Andy Gray is all about. As for my own exegesis, like you, I'm going with option 2. I give bonus points for any Scottish accent I can understand.

As we all know, God spelled backwards is Dog. Let's also note that Gray spelled backwards is Yarg. I'm not sure what to read into this, though. Maybe some of the clever people this site seems to attract can help. (I assume others of you also had mothers or grandmothers who'd say "Yargs" at moments of playtime misfortune.)

Richard — I'm pretty sure it was your comment that got me thinking about the nature of Andy Gray's certainty in the first place. So in a way, if you retract it, you destroy the universe. Just something to keep in mind.

Laurie — I know what you mean, but as a blogger I probably spend more time feeling that I'm struggling against the system from below. Not sure who that makes me…

Hana — I remember that exact exchange. It was like he was actively angry about the penalty rule, but resigned to his inability to change it in a way that made him seem vaguely admirable for not giving in to his anger, which was doubly bizarre because there was no clear reason for him to be angry in the first place. I enjoyed that whole conversation.

I absolutely adore your other profiles (that of a magical Andrea Pirlo in particular), but this was so incredibly spot on, I don't even know what to say. Your way with words and ideas is exquisite. Reminds me of the following gem between Andy Gray and Adiran Healy during Netherlands v Russia (take a wild guess who is who):

"I just…I don't understand why they count matches that go to penalties as draws. The team that wins the penalties should be the winner. They won. It's final."

"But Andy…that's how it is"

"Honestly…I just don't understand. I'd change it if I were them."

Andy Gray amuses me more than anything else, I think.

I actually don't mind Gray's commentary. I've listened to him for a while now – since he used to do Serie A with Martin Tyler. As opposed to some people I watch games with, my father in particular, I don't have too many problems understanding his accent either. Let's just pray that Sir Alex Ferguson doesn't take up commentating when he retires in – what is it now?- three or four season's time, I still have no idea what the hell he's on about.

I retract, with shame, my earlier comments on Mr. Gray's stone-tablet musings on the France-Italy game.

I once tried to imagine GolTV's Ray Hudson leading a tour of the Musee d'Orsay:

“Ach, that Matisse is magisterial in his motions, WATCH OUT!! Those brush-strokes slice through the canvas like a ninja-star through a potato!”

Not God, but you get the idea…
