What a great story, m4re. There's a post to be written sometime about the effect of videogames on fans' knowledge of the game. I'm guessing that any number of people have gotten to know various promising young players through Football Manager before they were ever in the public eye.

Just coming to this now via the latest trackback (5 nov). Great piece of writing. I had taken a liking to the team long before Euro 2008 thanks to the PES demo being out 6 months before the real version, I always played as Turkey, probably 3 games a day. I became familiar with many of the names and their electronic representations, so much that without Scotland in the competition they were my favored team.

Turkey had the smarts to go after teams of any size and that is how they did so well. Positive football rewarded!

Oh, also, Timoteo --- The hired-gun Brazilian thing is definitely out of control. I can't remember if I already posted this, but before the tournament started a Polish commentator made the argument that we need the 6+5 rule in international football.

The issues around all this are complex enough, however, that I've finally chosen just to find it hilarious.

Richard --- Haven't you figured out that I AM ACTUALLY BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER?

I agree with the rest of you about Turkey's technical prowess. Their ball control seemed to improve from match to match, which is amazing considering the casualties they suffered. I was impressed with both Boral and Kazim in this last match---they were given the chance to shine, and they took it. Kazim still needs some work, but he's still only 21.

What becomes of Fatih Terim now? I've seen some speculation that he'll get another chance with a big club (I'm skeptical), but I'm loving Zach's suggestion that he should come to MLS...

A.
I agree with you 100%. The Turkish players were very good technically, which allowed them to contol the midfield and execute a brilliantly conceived game plan. Great analysis Brian. You hit the nail on the head. However, I really don't like this Brazilians for hire to any national team trend.

Right on the money fella. As always. Never mind all the “heart” and “faith,” their “refusal to quit” bullshit bandied around by our weak and tepid TV pundits, Nihat, Boral, and Aurélio would breeze into any International or CL team. And Fatih Terim has one of the best footballing brains around. Either that or he's the greatest man motivator since Henry V.
