Well...I can't see into Buzz Bissinger's soul, but I do get a sense from the interview that his thinking has changed course to some degree since the Costas show. Even if the only thing that caused the change is the criticism he's taken for his tirade, it's still a step in the right direction.

I agree with Brent. Bissinger spewed alot of venom on Costas' show, complaining about the dumbing down of sports fans by sports blogs (ALL sports blogs, according to him), using the vilest, slimiest language imaginable. Then he makes his apology using the same language while telling us that our whole society is falling apart. Well duh, maybe he should look in the mirror as he makes his accusations.

I don't think he believes he did anything wrong. I think he's just sorry his diatribe became such a sensation and made him look like such a fool.

I'm not buying Buzz's apology. There's something wrong with it upon which I can't quite put my finger. I think it has to do with the vileness of his actions, and that he stopped short of fully. truly apologizing. He should be saying this:

"I blew it. We had an opportunity for an important discussion, and I blew it with my wild, ranting, uncivil approach. I had some things to say, but what I failed to do was listen. I blew it, and I'm sorry for doing that, and I wish I could do it over again and be a better, more thoughtful member of society in front of that same audience."

Yeah, that would do it for me.

Thanks for another excellent post. I was struck by BB's satisfaction with the "quite positive" inital reaction of "fellow panelists"; only the "next afternoon" did he consider (or realize) that this reaction might not be "representative" ....

Also, I wonder about sports writers and the possibilities of medium. Sports writing is about putting human performance into words, and therefore has always had an interesting and symbiotic relationship with photographs. That's why Sports Illustrated is Sports Illustrated, right? Now the internet, and its vast ever-growing archive of video clips, lets writers integrate their prose not only with still images but also with moving footage. RofP and other blogs reveal what can result--better reading, better watching, better understanding. Why wouldn't a writer want to exploit this, if he genuinely cared about writing sports well?
