The Run of Play is a blog about
the wonder and terror of soccer.
We left the window open during a match in October 2007 and a strange wind blew into the room.
Now we walk the forgotten byways of football with a lonely tread, searching for the beautiful, the bewildering, the haunting, and the absurd.
In keeping with the theme of this week’s Tuesday Portrait, here’s a video chronicling Iker Casillas’s long one-sided friendship with implosion and catastrophe. Sometimes, after yet another night of stifled humiliation, catastrophe tosses the remains of its cigarette angrily into a parking-lot puddle and contemplates walking away. But in every relationship there’s a gardener and a flower, and somewhere deep down catastrophe knows that it will go on being Casillas’s sidekick for as long as he wants it around. This is Iker Casillas, and these are your 37 historical non-goals of the week.
