  • Nomfundo Mcetywa has written a fascinating article about the South African government’s attempts to hide signs of poverty before the World Cup by eradicating shacklands in areas likely to be seen by tourists. According to Mcetywa, “FIFA has instructed that the locations of stadiums have picturesque surroundings.” According to a soon-to-be-evicted shackdweller, “They are just ashamed of us and want us out of the way so that visitors coming to the country won’t see the conditions we live under.”
